Carrie Fisher on Why it's a Big Deal to Show Star Wars to Your Kids

The one amazing thing about the original Star Wars is that it still manages to capture audiences from multiple generations, with adults now having passed on their love for Star Wars to their kids. Carrie Fisher a.k.a. Princess Leia, has some insight on why Star Wars is such a big deal for some people, and why they want it to be perfect when they share it to their children.

In her last book The Princess Diarist (via CNN), Fisher writes:

"It's like they're introducing the child to a tribe… There's a ritual -- you ... place them down as an offering, and say, 'Watch this.' Then you watch him watching 'Star Wars,' trying to find out how much you have in common with your kid. It's as if (parents) know they have this great gift to bestow, and they want to bestow it as perfectly as possible -- the perfect time, the perfect place, the perfect situation for passing on this life-defining experience. And the kids will always remember for their entire lives how they first felt when they first saw their now favorite movie. And they were given this gift from their parents, and now can share it together. Truly a family affair."

As a fan myself, I think Star Wars only truly takes a hold on children, and it stays with them as they grow up. Showing Star Wars to them too young will lead them to misunderstand what's going on, while showing it to them at an older age will probably bore them. I can rarely see people get into Star Wars when it's introduced to them in their adult years.

Though Fisher may have been tired of constantly being bombarded with Star Wars decades after her role as Princess Leia, it's wonderful how she is able to see the importance of the franchise to so many people in the world. Mark Hamill also understands how important it could be to some fans.

As for Harrison Ford, well, he just wants to put everything behind him.

If anything, probably the best age to introduce Star Wars to your kid is when they're about five years old; no younger than that.

The next upcoming Star Wars movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, comes out May 25.
