Captain Planet Movie Writer Promises 'Fun and Subversive' Take on The Hero

Captain Planet is a 90's cartoon fans haven't thought about in a while, though it's far from being forgettable. Most millennials will probably remember the surprisingly diverse cast putting their rings together and summoning a blue superhero whose weakness was dirt and other forms of pollution. And you thought Green Lantern's original weakness to the color yellow was dumb.

Anyway, what you might not know about the series is that Glen Powell of Scream Queens fame is writing a screenplay for a live-action Captain Planet movie. Trying to imagine a movie with the character is gonna be a bit tough since the original series is pretty cringe-inducing these days. It seems like Powell is aware of this since he's going to try and make this film subversive and fun.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell admitted that the series' old approach to telling stories won't work so he's going to try something different.

"I mean they've tried to make it into a superhero movie before, but they kind of did like an earnest take and ours is way more subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent. Sometimes you have to think of these things logically. If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can't do like an earnest take on that. You have to go at it from a fun [direction]."

He does have a point. Let's face it, nostalgia goggles aside the show actually wasn't that good at presenting some of its themes. There's actually an episode that involves AIDS and it's one of the worst things you'll ever see in an animated series. We'll give them an A for effort but it's clear that we can't have an earnest or serious live-action adaptation of the series.

Captain Planet and The Planeteers don't have a release date.
