Captain Marvel Star Brie Larson Addresses Smiling Controversy

There might be a whole lot of excitement building up over Captain Marvel, but when Marvel dropped the first trailer for the film, fans were underwhelmed by the preview's tone and by the passive look that Brie Larson had on her face while playing Carol Danvers. Fans started complaining about Captain Marvel's stoic face, taking to social media to ask why Carol Danvers couldn't be bothered to smile.

Speaking in an interview with Yahoo, Larson talks about a particular scene in Captain Marvel where Carol Danvers herself is asked to smile. According to the actress, the scene wasn't a reshoot in response to fans' reaction to the film's trailer.

"That's just a depiction of the female experience. That's just what it's like. It didn't bother me that much when I saw that that was the reaction [on social media], it's just how it goes," Larson explained.

Captain Marvel's co-director Anna Boden also decided to open up about the controversy, saying that women being asked to smile by strangers isn't an uncommon experience.

"It was always in the script and it's not an uncommon thing for women to hear. I think you'll ask any woman in this room and [she's heard comments like,] 'Oh, don't be so sad.'" Boden said, "It's a very common thing to hear as a woman so it doesn't surprise me at all that it was in social media. I think a lot of women can relate to that moment."

Captain Marvel has been touted to be a feminist and humanist film. Not only does the entry introduce the strongest Avenger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it also serves as the very first female-led comic book movie in the Marvel franchise.

Captain Marvel premieres on March 8, 2019.
