Captain Marvel has Beat Black Panther for Biggest Opening Weekend at the Box Office

The release of Captain Marvel is a pretty big deal for some people, seeing that it's the first woman-lead superhero film in a franchise as big as the MCU. As it turns out, the movie has already earned a whopping $455 million at the box office, beating out heavy hitters like Black Panther and the first Avengers movie.

According to Box Office Mojo, Captain Marvel's $455 million score has beat that of Black Panther which had earned $371.4 million on its opening weekend. The movie has also beaten out the likes of the first two Avengers films (both at $392.5), Captain America: Civil War ($379.5), and Iron Man 3 ($372.5).

When it comes to MCU films though, at the very top of the list is still Avengers: Infinity War, sitting on a $640.5 million opening weekend; I guess it's only fitting for a film 10 years in the making. I wonder if Endgame will be able to beat out that score when it comes out next month though.

Admittedly, the reviews that have been coming for Captain Marvel have not been so hot. Though the film is definitely a huge milestone for the studio, a lot of people agree that the film came out kind of bland—especially when you compare it to MCU standards.

Personally, I thought the movie needed more emotional stakes for Carol Danvers, who seemed to be breezing past all the revelations she's getting with no clear change in her character. I mean, even Wonder Woman had to deal with the reality that people were terrible on their own.

Then again, if the movie is able to inspire little girls and give them another superhero of their own, I think Captain Marvel had already done its job. I'm just hoping they kick-up her story arc for the inevitable sequel.
