A Captain Marvel sequel is part of the new slate of films that Marvel Studios is working on for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to a supposed schedule that recently leaked online. The film will reportedly be released in May 2022 right before the release of the rumored Avengers 5 (more on that here).
Captain Marvel 2 taking one of the slots of Marvel movies planned for the next four years doesn't come as a surprise. Even though marketing and promotion of the film were marred with controversy, the Brie Larson vehicle made over a billion dollars at the box office.
Additionally, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has made it pretty clear that the character will be the one to lead the MCU to a new era. In the book Captain Marvel: The Official Movie Special, he had this to say:
However, it is clear that the fanbase is divided with regards to the Carol Danvers character. In fact, thousands of fans have signed an online petition urging Larson to step down from the role. That petition has earned a little over 23,000 signatures at the time of writing.
Either way, it is looking more and more like Captain Marvel 2 is indeed happening. What is less certain, however, is the authenticity of the leak. Film critic and writer John Campea is reportedly the source of the schedule. He has a hit-or-miss track record with regards to leaks like this, so we recommend you take this report with a pinch of salt.
Marvel Studios has been focused on Avengers: Endgame and now Spider-Man: Far From Home, but we can expect news about upcoming MCU movies this summer.
