Puzzle Fighter was one of Capcom's more unique spin-off titles, taking characters from Street Fighter and Darkstalkers, but putting them in a puzzle game. Capcom is bringing the series back to the limelight, adding characters from Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and the Mega Man series. It will also be a mobile game, a move so obvious it's shocking that we are only seeing it now.
Like most mobile titles, this will be a free-to-play affair when it hits mobile phones and tablets sometime this year. No official release date has been revealed, though it will be playable this week during PAX West 2017. Confirmed characters thus far include Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Jill Valentine in her Resident Evil 5 gear, Dante, Frank West and Mega Man X.
Here is an overview of the game from Capcom:
Puzzle Fighterfeatures an outstanding roster of legendary characters and stages from popular Capcom franchises. Fan-favorites such as Ryu, Ken or Chun-Li (Street Fighter), X (Mega Man), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Frank West (Dead Rising), and more come to life with VO and cinematic special moves. Players pick one main character each with their own strengths and benefits, to face-off in explosive gem-crushing action. In addition, two assist characters can be chosen to further enhance the abilities of the main character. Simple to learn but deep in strategy, this highly addictive puzzle game has players strategically building up gems and destroying them to unleash epic combos that can knock out their opponent. Thrilling real-time versus battles, rewarding single player options and an array of content to unlock await in this ultimate puzzle fight!
With a super-deformed art style and plenty of favorites, Puzzle Fighter could be one of Capcom's better mobile games. Mobile gamers love the gem crushing puzzle genre, since it's addictive and phone friendly, so this could be a hit with Capcom fans. Download it on your iOS or Android device later this year.
