Candidate to Direct Black Widow Bashes Marvel for Not Letting Female Directors Handle Action Scenes

With Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home set for release next year, it's safe to assume that 2019 is a very good year for MCU fans. As fans wait for these big installments, some of them are looking forward to what the company will be releasing in 2020, as none of those movies have been named. Many of us are hoping that one of those films will be Black Widow but it looks like the making of that film has some surprising baggage.

Lucrecia Martel, one of the directors approached for the movie, recently shared some of her experiences with Marvel Studios and it's a bit troublesome. While the company is trying to add more female directors to make their movies, it seems like they still don't trust them to direct action scenes, if Martel's comments are anything to go by.

"Marvel and other such production houses are trying to involve more female filmmakers. They also told me, 'Don't worry about the action scenes, we will take care of that.' I was thinking, 'Well I would love to meet Scarlett Johansson but also I would love to make the action sequences.'"
"Companies are interested in female filmmakers but they still think action scenes are for male directors. The first thing I asked them was maybe if they could change the special effects becausethere's so many laser lights... I find them horrible. Alsothe soundtrack of Marvel films is quite horrendous. Maybe we disagree on this but it's really hard to watch a Marvel film. It's painful to the ears to watch Marvel films."

Marvel having problems with directors isn't exactly news sadly, as the company had issues with Alan Taylor for Thor: The Dark World and the acclaimed Edgar Wright, who was supposed to helm Ant-Man. It seems like Martel didn't have the intense input that these two directors had when making the movie but her concerns are pretty legitimate. Why wouldn't they want her to direct action scenes? She's the director.

Cate Shortland will reportedly direct the movie so here is hoping that she gets some say for the action sequences. Directing isn't a boys game and it's something that Marvel and a number of other film companies need to know.

As of this writing, no release date has been given for Black Widow.
