Amid the talks about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal status after the revelations and allegations they made in the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan and the former’s memoir, Spare, there are questions about if the Duchess of Sussex can become Queen.

When Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, it changed the royal family’s line of succession. Charles is now the King, while Prince William has become the heir apparent. Following Wales’ kids is Prince Harry, being fifth in line to the throne. As the Duke of Sussex is still part of the succession, is there a chance for Meghan to become the queen consort?

The Small Chance Meghan Markle Can Become Queen

According to Daily Times, Prince Harry has made it clear that he and his wife have no plans to return to the U.K. as senior royals after leaving the monarchy in 2020.

But despite the alleged feud and strained relationship, it can’t be denied that they remain members of the royal family. Despite the talks to remove their titles after the explosive revelations, they’re still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Hence, Prince Harry remains in the line of success, though there’s only a little chance he can become the king and Meghan his queen consort.

After King Charles, Prince William will be the next king, followed by his three kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

The only chance that Prince Harry can become king is if the heirs pass away, they decline to ascend the throne, or they’re not fit for it.

The Future of the Queen Consort Title

Meanwhile, Cosmopolitan reported that the title of queen consort might change in the future as part of the Succession to the Crown Act.

The parliament reportedly discussed the possibility of naming any king’s wife the princess consort instead.

The proposal to establish a new royal recognition has sparked an ongoing debate about ensuring giving equal title distribution.

So even if Prince Harry has the chance to ascend the throne, Meghan will not be named Queen but queen consort instead, which is traditionally bestowed upon the monarch’s spouse.

The late Prince Philip was bestowed a similar “consort” title when he tied the knot with Queen Elizabeth in 1947, giving up his Prince of Greece and Denmark title and becoming the Duke of Edinburgh.
