Call of Duty: Vanguard is bringing a new mode to its multiplayer package: Patrol. Patrol is an evolution of Hardpoint, a classic Call of Duty mode introduced first in Black Ops 2. Vanguard is introducing combat pacing to its multiplayer, which is a setting that allows gamers to choose how many players are in a match of Vanguard that ranges from the traditional 6v6 to much larger modes with player-counts at the level of Modern Warfare's Ground War.

But outside of combat pacing, traditional modes are also returning to Vanguard in addition to the all-new mode, Patrol. Patrol will be able to be played across Vanguard's different combat pacing options, so player-counts will vary depending on combat pacing selection.

Patrol will play very similarly to Hardpoint, a mode in Call of Duty where teams are tasked with securing and defending different hardpoints located in different portions of the map. Only one Hardpoint is active at a time, and once a Hardpoint disappears, a new Hardpoint takes its place.

This makes for an exciting competitive mode, but much of the strategy of Hardpoint relies on knowing the different Hardpoint locations on each map by heart. In public matches, though, this knowledge is very rare. In a Call of Duty like Black Ops Cold War the next Hardpoint's location appears in the game-world before the previous Hardpoint disappears, giving players time to make their way to the new Hardpoint.

This helps to even the information gap between veteran Hardpoint players and casual players, but it's rarely enough. A team who knows where each Hardpoint is on a map and can position themselves at the correct location before the indicator even appears will almost always beat a team that doesn't have that information.

Patrol in Vanguard is like a version of Hardpoint that fixes this fundamental issue. In Patrol, a ‘Hardpoint' appears that then slowly rotates around the map, and players are tasked with working together with their team to secure this point and earn enough score by holding this point to win the game.

A game of Patrol ends if nobody secures the point for five minutes, or if one team reaches 200 points (points being earned by holding the moving point in-game). Since the point moves, equipment like a Trophy System or even mines or other stationary explosives will be a lot less useful. The pace of Patrol, naturally, will be a bit quicker than traditional Hardpoint.
