It looks like Activision just lost a major IP as Bungie has confirmed that they have split from the gaming publisher and are bringing Destiny with them. Activision published the first two games so this is pretty surprising as the developers are now planning to self-publish future titles on their own. Only time will tell if Bungie will continue the game's future successfully but the split seems to be amicable, at least according to the developers.
According to Bungie's blog post, the transition to bring Destiny's rights to Bungie are already underway and both companies are supposedly committed to making this as seamless as possible. Let's hope it stays that way since corporate greed is something that can easily happen, especially with a million dollar-franchise like Destiny.
"We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we're excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects."
Destiny 2 was a moderate success, though some fans were a bit disappointed with it early on. Since this is a game that focuses a lot on online play, the early days were a bit of a pain for some. Thankfully, those issues have been fixed and the game is now playable, though some are wondering if the DLC was worth it.
Both Destiny and Destiny 2 are available now on a number of consoles.
