Bumblebee Movie Will Be Like 'The Iron Giant'

The Bumblebee spinoff is moving forward, and we know that it will be a prequel to the first Transformers movie, taking place in the 80s. We're getting little information on it from day-to-day, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura likens it to classic animated film, The Iron Giant.

In an interview with Collider, di Bonaventura addresses the fact that there will be significantly less Transformers in this movie, Bumblebee possibly being the only one appearing. He says:

"In fact it reminds me a little bit of Iron Giant years ago when I did that movie at Warner Bros. It just reminds me a little bit of that where it was very contained and yet it didn't feel small."

He also said:

"I know we're doing a spinoff first in the Bumblebee movie, and that is a very distinctive departure from what you've been seeing so far… The objective of that movie is to develop more time with less robots in a way, and to go back to 1985 and go back to sort of the original heritage if you would of the Transformers. G1."

This time around, we'll be introduced to a female human lead played by True Grit and Pitch Perfect 2's Hailee Steinfeld. She'll be playing a tomboy who has an after-school mechanic job. This will also be the first Transformers movie not to have Michael Bay at the helm as Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) is attached to direct.

I'm very curious to see where this movie goes, and I'm hoping it explains just how Bumblebee ended up in that used car shop right before Sam Witwicky bought him. Also I'm hoping he's a VW Beetle his time around, just like in the originals.

Bumblebee is set for a release on June 8, 2018.
