Since the upcoming Bumblebee movie promised a new look to old characters, a lot of fans were sure that the jet in the first trailer was a redesigned Starscream. As it turns out, that's not the case.
During Bumblebee's Hall H panel at SDCC 2018 (via ComicBookMovie), it was revealed that the jet is actually a character called Blitzwing.
In the cartoons, Blitzwing was pretty much like Starscream, who was also a jet, but he actually had a second transformation which turned him into a tank. I think the double transformation is what will make him a more formidable villain in the film, and I think the ‘Starscream' colors in the trailer are just a fun nod to the original design in G1.
Joining Blitzwing in the film will be two other Decepticons named Dropkick (Justin Theroux) and Shatter (Angela Bassett). As it turns out, the two are triple changers as well. Besides their car modes, they can also take the form of a jet and a helicopter.
After the larger than life films of Michael Bay, the Transformers franchise is looking to simplify things with Travis Knight's Bumblebee. This time around, we're only getting four transformers in the film, and we're promised a smaller, more emotional story compared to Bay's entries.
Bumblebee is set to come out Dec. 21.
