Brandon Sanderson Says He Should Have Written Elden Ring Instead of George R.R. Martin

By now, gamers who are hyped for Elden Ring, already know that Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) author George R.R. Martin worked on the lore of FromSoftware's upcoming RPG a few years ago. Now, another famous fantasy author recently shared his thoughts about the developer's choice.

In a recent Q&A shared on his YouTube channel, Brandon Sanderson, the novelist best known for his critically acclaimed Cosmere novels and for writing the final three books of the late Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, argued that he should have been the one asked to write Elden Ring instead of the Game of Thrones author.

When a fan asked Sanderson about the process involved in letting one of his characters appear in another property, he started explaining how his Mistborn character Kelsier ended up in Fortnite, but he also didn't hold back when it comes to sharing his thoughts about FromSoftware's decision to tap George R.R. Martin instead of him for Elden Ring.

“Most of [these requests] go to the agent these days, but sometimes they pop up for me, but let me be salty,” he said. “From Software decides to make a fantasy game and partner with a fantasy novelist, right?"

The 46-year-old author pointed out that Martin isn't really a gamer, whereas he played all of FromSoftware's titles since King's Field game: "And they choose someone who spends his days blogging about the NFL, rather than the person who has played their games since King’s Field, and has listed their games among his top 10 consistently over time? What are you thinking, people?

“If you don’t know, they went to George, and made a game with George, and I’m like, George doesn’t play video games. George has no idea. So anyway, there you go.”

Last year, Martin wrote in his blog about his experience creating the world of Elden Ring with Hidetaka Miyazaki.

While he admitted that “video games are not really [his] thing”, he did spent some of his time on strategy classics like Railroad Tycoon, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Master of Orion.
