Warning: Major spoilers from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 66 and 67 below.

That major character is the titular hero himself and the son of Naruto, Boruto. The latest chapter features Borushiki fighting Kawaki. Near the end of the chapter, Boruto is struggling to take control of his body, and as he is kneeling on the ground, he says that there's a "last resort" option. Then Boruto clasps his hands together and make the serpent hand seal as Naruto screams out in horror. Naruto is able to touch his son again, but Boruto blasts him out of the way using Wind Release Gale Palm.

Kawaki says that Boruto has been preparing for this moment. As Boruto looks at Kawaki, he asks him to kill him while his consciousness is still suppressing Momoshiki.

In order to save Naruto, Kawaki pierces Boruto straight to the chest, and at least a meter of Kawaki's transformed arm has gone out the other side, which is now pouring blood. Naruto looks shocked to see his son killed, and this is where the chapter ends.

Did Boruto actually die?

We've already shared fans' reactions to this shocking scene, and now that Chapter 67 has been released, we now know the answer.

Chapter 66 ends with Boruto's body looking unconscious on the ground, with a huge gaping hole on his chest, eyes shut, and bleeding. There's no indication that he's alive, and it doesn't seem to be a Shadow Clone, so right now, it's hard to imagine how Boruto could actually survive the devastating attack.

However, the end of Boruto Chapter 66 doesn't confirm if Boruto actually die from Kawaki's attack, but details from Chapter 67, titled Rift, have already surfaced, and according to the spoilers, Boruto was resurrected by Momoshiki. You can read more spoiler details about Chapter 67 here.

Boruto is surprisingly brought back to life thanks to his connection to the Ohtsutsuki, Momoshiki. Naruto and Shikimaru are surprised to see Boruto come back to life; Even Boruto is wondering how he's still alive.

When Boruto questions how he was able to survive, Momoshiki appears before him, then explains how he not only saved his life, but fundamentally altered his DNA in the process:

"Part of your heart and lungs were destroyed and you lost a large amount of blood. You would've died of course, had I not interfered. I resuscitated you, using part of the Karma," Momoshiki explained. "As you know, your Karma contains all of me in data form, compressed. About 82 percent had already been extracted and diffused into your body. My resurrection would finally become possible once the remaining 18 percent finished extracting, but regrettably, not if my Vessel itself were to get destroyed beforehand. So I had no choice, but to rewrite that last 18 percent in your data, so that the cells and tissues you lost could be fabricated anew."
