The Bocchi the Rock! film is coming to the US soon, as Crunchyroll recently confirmed that it has acquired the license for the compilation film’s theatrical release.
With this announcement, Bocchi fans in the US will be able to watch Hitori Gotoh and the Kessoku Band’s story on the big screen.
This announcement is quite unexpected considering that most compilation films are released only in Japan.
Bocchi the Rock Film Confirms US Cinema Release
Bocchi the Rock aired during the fall 2022 season, and it became a huge hit both in Japan and internationally thanks to its creative humor, loveable characters, and excellent music.
Even though the anime’s first season was a huge success, it has yet to get a second season. Despite this, fans have been treated to concerts and various collabs.
Soon, fans in Japan will be able to see the anime in cinemas thanks to the two-part Bocchi the Rock compilation film. These two movies are basically the two halves of season 1 stitched together as movies.
Compilation films like these are fairly common in Japan, with many popular anime such as Code Geass and Berserk getting compilation theatrical releases. For the most part, though, these don’t make their way to US cinemas.
In a surprise move, Crunchyroll announced that it has acquired the theatrical license for the film in North America.
While no release date was announced, this is confirmation that fans in the US and potentially Canada will be able to watch the two-part compilation in cinemas.
When Will the Bocchi the Rock Movie Premiere in the US? Release Date Predictions
Fans in Japan will be able to watch the first part tomorrow, June 7. Meanwhile, the second part will be released in cinemas on August 9, 2024.
Typically, anime film releases in the US lag behind the Japanese premiere by a few months. As such, the first part will likely be released sometime in fall 2024, with the second part potentially getting an early 2025 release.
Given that it’s a compilation film, the Bocchi the Rock movie will also likely get a limited theatrical release, possibly just a few days in select cinemas.
After all, wide releases are typically reserved for big shonen titles such as One Piece or Demon Slayer.
What to Expect in Hitori Gotoh’s Big Screen Debut
As the first season only consists of 12 episodes, each half of the season perfectly fits as a two-hour movie.
Because of this, the compilation films are expected to have almost the same scenes as the original TV anime, with the only addition likely being the new song.
Even though the film version won’t differ much from the original, dedicated fans should likely have a ton of fun with them. After all, the anime is still incredibly entertaining on a rewatch.
