Blade Runner 2049: Alternate Ending Was Supposed To Have Deckard Die

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BLADE RUNNER 2049]

Dennis Vellinueve's Blade Runner 2049 may not be tearing up the box office, but it certainly has gotten the attention of a lot of critics. The movie ends with Ryan Gosling replicant officer dying in the snow, but originally it was supposed to have Harrison Ford's character Deckard die in the end.

In an interview with The LA Times, original Blade Runner and 2049 writer Hampton Fancher explains his original fate for Deckard beside co-writer Michael Green:

"In my script, Deckard died at the end, but you [Green] have him live. The first time Ridley and I ever considered doing a second Blade Runner in 1986 or whatever it was, I came up with an idea about Deckard and his next job—and it's kind of horrifying what happens in my little fantasy. Now that Deckard lives, that idea is back in my head. But I'm not going to tell you what it is."

It's worth noting that Harrison Ford's character Han Solo was also killed off after Ford returned to Star Wars back in 2015. Seeing Deckard die in this film would probably lead fans to believe Ford was finding a way to not have to return to any more sequels in the future. Next thing you know, Ford gets killed off in the next Indiana Jones movie as well.

With Harrison Ford being the lovable grump that he is, I think it's unlikely that he'll want to be onboard for a third Blade Runner; but seeing how the film is underperforming, he may not even have to come back. Such a shame since 2049 is definitely a cinematic masterpiece.

Blade Runner 2049 is now out in theaters.
