Black Widow Writer Explains How Its Action Will Be Different From Other Superhero Movies

Black Widow will be the first movie as part of Marvel's phase four, taking place after the events of Captain America: Civil War and fleshing out her backstory. This is something fans have been asking for since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where she showed off her personality and awesome abilities. Considering the grounded setting for this flick, fans will be happy to know that there will be a lot of hand-to-hand combat, so nothing like a typical superhero film.

Speaking with Inverse, writer Jac Schaeffer talked about the combat in the movie, stating that it will be visceral, aggressive, and very human. If the fight scenes can match what we saw during The Winter Soldier then this could be one of the most entertaining MCU movies. No joke, some of the fight scenes in Winter Soldier are up there with the MCU's best scenes.

"The fighting [in Black Widow] is a lot of close contact, hand-to-hand combat. It's very visceral. There's a lot of aggression and power in a very human way that I find really satisfying and really exciting to watch, but it's the polar opposite to writing for super-powered characters."

Interestingly enough, Schaeffer is also hoping that future MCU movies try to find an alternative to violence. While super-powered fights are the definition of cool, making heroes focus on the whole saving aspect would be better. Schaeffer uses Captain Marvel as an example of violence that doesn't kill anyone, though some of the Kree soldiers do die, just not by Carol's hands.

"I would like to see alternatives to violence in superhero movies. Maybe I would qualify that by saying, alternatives to glamorizing guns and weaponry. That's one of the reasons that I love Captain Marvel: it's all about inner power. And the destruction is not at the expense of human life."

Black Widow comes out on May 1, 2020.
