Despite not getting a Best Picture nomination unlike the first film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever still managed to receive five nominations in the 95th Academy Awards and it is an impressive recognition nonetheless since MCU movies don't generally receive nominations as many as this if you look back on their history.
Fortunately, out of the five nominations that it received, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever won the Oscar for Best Costume Design during last night's ceremony. This marks costume designer Ruth Carter's second win in the category after winning for the first film a few years ago, which was a historic feat back then.
It managed to beat other films that were competing in the category such as Babylon, Elvis (which was predicted as the frontrunner by most pundits), Everything Everywhere All at Once (the Best Picture winner), and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.
The film was also contending for Best Supporting Actress (Angela Bassett), Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Song for Rihanna's "Lift Me Up," who also performed the song during the ceremony. It is also the second MCU film to receive an Oscar following the first Black Panther.
Carter also made history in her win for Wakanda Forever as she became the first-ever Black woman to win multiple Oscars. The Black Panther films have also joined the company of The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Top Gun, and Avatar where the first two films of the franchise managed to take home an Oscar.
What makes the film's win more impressive in this category is that it's also the first time that both films in the same series (Black Panther) won in this category. While sequels have won here previously, this is truly the first time where the winning sequel also had its first film win previously.
Whether you like the film or not, there is no doubt that the costume design is one of its best parts, especially since Carter also has to make costumes for the Talokan Empire and new ones for some of the returning characters, particularly Queen Ramonda and Shuri, the new Black Panther.
