One of the interesting changes in Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is Black Canary. Although the character has always been portrayed as a white blond woman, the DC Extended Universe flick opted to cast a person of color for the role. Interestingly, this wasn't just something that Warner Bros. called for. Christina Hodson has just confirmed that Margot Robbie had pushed for Black Canary to be played by an actor of color.
Hodson, who wrote the screenplay for Birds of Prey, recently spoke to Screenrant about working on the DCEU film. When asked whether she had purposedly called for a person of color to play Black Canary, Hodson revealed that it was something she and Robbie immediately agreed on.
"Margot and I put that in I think in the first draft. It felt right to me, I wanted to. Warners have been wonderful and supportive. No one ever questioned it," she revealed.
Hodson also praised Jurnee Smollett-Bell for her portrayal of the DC comic book heroine.
"I think Jurnee crushed it. She feels such a natural Black Canary," she said.
We definitely agree with Hodson here. From what we've seen of Black Canary so far, it looks like she is a powerful character who isn't afraid to take on anyone. She's one of the reasons why we can't wait to see the film next month.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is scheduled for release on February 7.
