Birds of Prey: The Truth Behind Harley Quinn's DIY Wardrobe

There is little doubt that Harley Quinn has her own distinct fashion sense but it looks like the beloved DC character will be her own designer in Birds of Prey. Interestingly, there's a story behind Harley's new DIY wardrobe in the upcoming DC Extended Universe film.

Birds of Prey costume designer Erin Benach recently spoke to Collider about working on the Warner Bros. movie and making sure that Harley gets a cool new look in the film. Benach explained that there was a reason behind Harley's odd pieces like the caution tape jacket.

"Behind her story is always something a little bit off from center and a little bit crazy, with the idea being that caution tape may be a place to stay away from, and maybe it's a way to caution the world against what she might do," Benach said. "So, we kind of took the idea of that caution tape and tried to repurpose it into a costume."

Benach added that they wanted to show off a different, more creative side of Margot Robbie's character in Birds of Prey.

"We always wanted to create something that felt like Harley made it herself, so she's sort of a crafty person in the backroom and she can make stuff herself — you know the shorts that she's painted and the jacket that she's put together herself. That's why we did it like that. It's fun and a little bit crazy like her," she said.

It's awesome to know that there was a lot of thought put into Harley's costumes in Birds of Prey and although it can be loud at times, it's also distinctly the character's own. Needless to say, we can wait to see more of Harley's outfits in the DCEU flick.

Birds of Prey is scheduled for release on February 7, 2020.
