Birds of Prey Star Jurnee Smollett-Bell Shares How Injustice 2 Inspired Her Black Canary

We're already excited about Birds of Prey considering that it will be the first time we'll see Black Canary being fleshed out on the big screen. But what could be the inspiration behind this new version of the DC comic book character? Jurnee Smollett-Bell has just revealed that she was inspired by the Black Canary that appeared in the video game Injustice 2.

Smollett-Bell recently spoke to Comicbook.com about her role in Birds of Prey and the actress was quick to admit that she took some pointers from the character that appeared in the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment title.

"I drew a lot of inspiration for the Canary Cry from the Black Canary in Injustice 2," Smollett-Bell shared. "Yeah, even physically. But for me, I really wanted to make it very primal. That was part of it for me because it's, it's not something she uses, you know, it's something she's trying to hide, and so to get to the point to rev herself up, it's coming from such a guttural point and a guttural place."

We've seen a glimpse of the Canary Cry in the final trailer of Birds of Prey and it already looks amazing. Not surprisingly, Smollett-Bell admitted that she went through pains for her portrayal of the character. Nevertheless, it was all worth it.

"It was fine, man. I mean they put a bunch of people on some strings and ratcheted them back and it was awesome. I felt really powerful," she admitted.

It sounds like Smollett-Bell truly enjoyed playing Black Canary in the Warner Bros. movie. Needless to say, we can't wait to see her in action this February.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will premiere on February 7.
