2020 is a big year for female filmmakers since four big superhero movies to be released this year are all directed by women — Black Widow, Eternals, Wonder Woman 1984, and Birds of Prey. This is certainly a change of phase and fans are surely excited to see their take on comic book movies. For Birds of Prey director, Cathy Yan, she has had great support in making the upcoming movie, but it wasn't an easy process.

In a recent interview with Variety, Yan revealed that she contacted Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins while she was doing some preparations for the film. "I had such institutional support from the get-go," she said. "But at the same time, every day, I remember being very concerned about, like, I've never done this before."

"I actually called up Patty Jenkins during prep and I'm like, ‘What am I doing?" she continued. "She told me, ‘You've got to remember that no one knows this movie as much as you. That's what makes you the director.' And that was really, really helpful."

Yan says she hopes that having women in charge of these kinds of films could prove that "female directors can do movies of scale," that women are "capable" of making action movies. She also admitted that there's still "a lot more to be done." While it is great to have four women directing blockbuster movies, Yan says we have to make sure that "there's a sustainable flow of new talent" as well.
