Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) might be enjoying positive reviews from fans and from critics, however, the colorful female riot failed to reach the $40 to $60 million benchmark that analysts thought the film would make at the box office.
While the domestic box office results of Birds of Prey's opening weekend might seem disappointing, CBR reminds fans that the film is still set out to make a profit despite its seemingly small opening. Sure, Birds of Prey's $33.25 million domestic box office haul might not seem like much when comic book movies can make $100 million and upwards, most movies don't ever really cross the $50 million benchmark.
In fact, what fans aren't seeing is how Birds of Prey outperformed John Wick: Chapter 2, a film that many consider as a success. Like Harley Quinn's (Margot Robbie) riot grrrl team-up movie, the second installment in the John Wick franchise is an R-rated, action-heavy movie with a whole lot of style. Despite the poor results of odd marketing campaign choices, the film became well-known because of positive word of mouth.
When John Wick: Chapter 2 released in 2017, it only opened to $30.4 million at the domestic box office. Yet the film was still considered a success because of its leggy release.
Birds of Prey could very well do the same. Not only does the film have great reviews from critics, but it also has a strong word of mouth too. We're sure that the film will make up for its production cost and make a little extra to boot.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is currently screening in cinemas.
