We all knew Bill and Ted were going to face the music in, well, Bill & Ted Face the Music (or Bill & Ted 3 if you're lazy) but it looks like Orion Pictures have also decided to face this music. It was announced that the highly-anticipated third film in this franchise has been delayed a few days, now releasing on September 1 instead of August 28. That's not the biggest shocker yet since this movie is now getting simultaneously released in theaters and video on demand (VOD) on its new date.
As expected, this is because of how COVID-19 has changed things with studios having to go back and reshuffle their releases and pray that things get better so people can actually come to theaters like the good old days. To that extent, Orion has decided that it would be better to just release Bill & Ted 3 digitally and let theaters willing to show the film do so, which is a decent enough compromise.
Obviously, this isn't the first movie to change course from theaters to VOD. Artemis Fowl went on to become a Disney+ original movie and a bad one at that. Trolls: World Tour also decided to go the digital route and managed to become quite the success because of it. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run moved from its 2020 release to a VOD release next year, coming to CBS All Access for American viewers and Netflix for international fans.
Now for some good news; we got a new Bill & Ted Face the Music trailer. As expected, it's totally excellent and reeks of awesomeness so we're happy that this announcement wasn't a complete downer. Orion Pictures is making the best out of a sad situation and we admire them for making the movie more readily available to those who are still nervous about the outside world.
Bill & Ted Face the Music comes to theaters and VOD on September 1.
