BIGBANG Comeback Controversy: Known Media Outlet Sees Problem in G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung’s Return

After YG Entertainment confirmed the return of BIGBANG, one media outlet sees a potential backlash that may welcome G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, and Daesung. Dispatch reveals the quartet may face criticisms due to the controversies surrounding them before.

YG announced on Feb. 7 that BIGBANG would be releasing a new single this spring. “The recording process is already finished and the group will begin filming for the music video soon,” it said. So, what will welcome G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang and Daesung four years after being away in the spotlight?

The Issues BIGBANG May Face

It can’t be denied that the K-pop band remains a powerhouse. Before BTS made waves, the originally five-piece band conquered the music scene—even internationally.

However, Dispatch, a known media outlet in Korea, believes there may be a problem in their return.

Take it from T.O.P. Two years ago, he said that he wouldn’t make a comeback in Korea on his Instagram Live broadcast. In fact, he had no plans to come back at all after the severe criticism he suffered after his illegal marijuana use case.

"The original leaders of K-Pop, Big Bang, plan on 'slowly' making a comeback despite the fact that 4 out of its 5 members have stirred 'illegal' controversies,” the report revealed.

It also sees the public’s response as cold after YG confirmed the boys would officially return to the music scene.

“This is understandable, as each of the members' individual records(?) are on the same scale as a big bang,” it said.

The BIGBANG Members’ Controversies

The media outlet then revealed the controversies each BIGBANG member had.

The first one is G-Dragon. The fashion designer was also investigated for illegal marijuana use in 2011. Though there were traces of marijuana in his substance test, he didn’t undergo prosecution due to his testimony and clean criminal record.

"It was a cigarette that a stranger handed me,” he said. “I did not know that it contained illegal drugs.”

T.O.P was also investigated for the same case in 2017. At the time, he was still enlisted as a conscripted police officer.

However, after his alleged marijuana use, he was removed from his position and continued his mandatory military service as a public service worker. He was later found guilty of using the illegal substance and was sentenced to a fine.

Lastly, Daesung also faced an investigation after the police reported that an illegal adult entertainment business was operating in the building he owned. The vocalist refused the claim and said he had no idea about it.

However, the business owners stressed he knew what was going on. Daesung later apologized, though he didn’t face any charges.

“When their controversies arose, neither G-Dragon, nor T.O.P, nor Daesung addressed them head-on,” Dispatch continued. “Instead, they blamed others or stayed away from the public's gaze in private hospital rooms.”
