Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals A Shocking Detail About Doctor Strange

With only more than two months before the Doctor Strange sequel finally hit the big screens, the hype for the film constantly gets bigger. Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange made his debut in 2016's Doctor Strange and was instantly followed by substantial involvement in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Doctor Strange's last appearance was 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, where he helped new Avenger member Peter Parker in forging a spell that would conceal his identity.

After Marvel president, Kevin Feige's recent announcement about the titular hero, claiming that Doctor Strange is now the new anchor of the MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch, on the other hand, revealed a shocking revelation.

Given the multiverse storyline that MCU's Phase 4 is currently revolving in, its no wonder that Doctor Strange should be the leader of the new Avengers. However, Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that his status is far different from what normally comes with being a part of the Avengers.

In an interview with KCRW's The Treatment, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Benedict Cumberbatch revealed his real status with the MCU's Avengers, debunking his involvement with the group:

"He's fine with aligning himself with creatures and spirits and everything else that's thrown at him and that's why he can be a slight outsider as an Avenger."

The actor furtherly explained how being an Avenger is merely just a job title for his character. Cumberbatch explained, "People say that you were in the Avengers, but you're not an Avenger, right? No, I'm not. I'm not at Stark Tower with Nick Fury. No, he's sort of outside of that realm, but I don't think that's necessarily a character trait. I think that is just a job title. He's there to protect the reality of the Avengers in a different way to what they have been fighting up until the point that everything collides in the last two Avengers movies, so he holds his position as an adult on the periphery of that, but I think only for so long. There's always a moment where he has to work with people and team up. And you know, we might see that in the next film; you have to wait and see."

The MCU keeps getting bigger and bigger as the franchise keeps on introducing new characters for the future phases of this new cinematic universe. For the multiverse phase that the MCU is currently highlighting, there's no doubt that Stephen Strange is the ideal leader for the new group of heroes who will be dealing with the future dilemmas of the multiverse.

Although Doctor Strange keeps on playing a substantial part in several films of the MCU, like playing a key role in defeating Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, helping Peter Parker in No Way Home, and now helping Wanda Maximoff in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, being an Avenger won't be the only thing that defines Stephen Strange. Strange's responsibility as a sorcerer includes protecting the world from mystical creatures, and of course, making sure that the multiverse doesn't destroy the reality that he is trying to protect.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit the big screens on May 6.
