Batman: Soul of the Dragon Animated Movie Announced with Bruce Timm Producing

Batman might be synonymous with the ‘60s but it looks like the character is done with that era for now, as DC has announced a ‘70s era animated movie called Batman: Soul of the Dragon. As if the setting and first screenshot weren't promising enough, the movie will be produced by Bruce Timm, who many still hold in high regard due to his work on Batman: The Animated Series, though that might be the only connection this movie has to the iconic show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Batman: Soul of the Dragon is an original story that is not based on any of the comics, which is almost new territory for these DC animated movies. The ‘70s aesthetic really shows in the promo image below, which is when kung-fu movies and films many labeled blaxploitation were popular so we give them credit for paying tribute to the era.

Just want to say, Batman's classic costume looks sweet. We miss the yellow oval and wish it were used more so this is a really nice touch. The other characters with him are Richard Dragon, Ben Turner, and Lady Shiva, the latter of whom is a pretty popular Batman villain so I wouldn't bank on that alliance lasting long.

Batman: Soul of the Dragon stars David Giuntoli as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Mark Dacascos as Richard Dragon, Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva, Michael Jai White as Ben Turner/Bronze Tiger, James Hong as O-Sensei and Josh Keaton as Jeffrey Burr. Batman: The Animated Series' Bruce Timm is executive producing, with Sam Liu, known for Reign of the Supermen and Batman: The Killing Joke, directing and producing. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge writer Jeremy Adams penned the script.

As of this writing, Batman: Soul of the Dragon is scheduled for a 2021 release.
