- Quick Answer: Director Kane Parsons is already contracted for Backrooms 2, following the first film's historic $118 million global box office opening weekend for A24.
The internet creepypasta has officially shattered the traditional Hollywood studio system. Over the weekend, A24's big-screen adaptation of Backrooms pulled off one of the biggest box office shocks in modern cinema history: opening with $81 million over the weekend against a $10 million production budget. Considering its record-breaking box office numbers, could fans expect a Backrooms 2 to happen in the future?
Director Kane Parsons Has a Different Approach for Backrooms 2

Made on a modest $10 million budget, the psychological sci-fi horror film brought in a mind-boggling $81.5 million domestically and $118 million worldwide, dethroning major studio tentpoles and setting the record for the biggest opening weekend in A24's history.
At just 26 years old, director Kane Parsons (known online as Kane Pixels) has become the youngest filmmaker to ever top the global box office. Unsurprisingly, A24 isn't letting its new golden goose wait around. Parsons has already confirmed that he is under contract to develop Backrooms 2, and he has a distinct vision for where the expanding universe is heading next.
Actually, right before Backrooms even premiered, Parsons was already discussing his plans of making a sequel, if not a series of movies, and more to come!
"[Sequels are] more than an option - it's been the intention since 2022," Parsons told Polygon in a recent interview, "I went as far as I could with the YouTube series. [Making a feature film] became an option - I thought it'd be a much slower road to get to where things are now."
Rather than sticking to standard horror sequel tropes, Parsons is taking an entirely different approach. While many horror follow-ups simply increase the body count and rehash the same scare tactics, Parsons wants to flip the script. Instead of focusing on the survival-horror of endless yellow rooms, the sequel will pivot to a larger existential dread in a broader sci-fi thriller setup.
What Could Make Backrooms 2 Come to Fruition
Since the first Backrooms film features Chiwetel Ejiofor as Curtis, a struggling used furniture store owner who discovers a basement of his business an interdimensional portal that leads to a maze of liminal spaces containing bizarrely placed objects and evil entities, what could Parsons' Backrooms 2 be about?
The overwhelming financial success of the first film has officially given A24 its first massive, blockbusting franchise, making a sequel a top priority for the studio. Parsons hopes to use the momentum (and a highly likely increased budget from A24) to shift from Curtis's localized nightmare into a multi-perspective look at how government and private sectors interact and react with the terrifying void.
"This film is the first part in what I would desire to be several narrative steps, in terms of approaching what I consider to be the true heart of the idea," Parsons said in the same interview, "I just don't think you could get to it in the time you have for a single movie."
As much as Parsons loves the YouTube platform, there is absolutely no way he would limit himself to just one spot. Instead, he wants to respect the story's online roots while building something vastly more expansive for the big screens.
"Without a doubt, Backrooms has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film," Parsons told Variety on May 29, "If anything, I would say this is a bit of a foot in the door that would lead to more of a progression towards the true root of the narrative, which has been set up online for years."
