Awkwafina has been making a lot of people laugh over the last couple of years but her brand of comedy has had its fair share of critics and last year, the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actress found herself in the middle of a controversy after she was accused of cultural appropriation.

For the uninitiated, the Katy actress drew backlash from fans ahead of Shang-Chi's premiere over her alleged use of "blaccent" in her various skits and movie roles, most notably as Goh Peik Lin in Crazy Rich Asians and Constance in Ocean's 8. Awkwafina never addressed the matter upfront except for that time where she said she's open to discussions about it.

Over the weekend, she finally broke her silence regarding the controversy and apologized for offending her audience. Now, one day following her explanation, Awkwafina once again took to the social media platform to announce that she's leaving Twitter for the foreseeable future. According to the actress, her therapist advised her to take a break from Twitter which she now considers an "ingrown toenail".

The MCU star writes: "Well, I’ll see you in a few years, Twitter - per my therapist. To my fans, thank you for continuing to love and support someone who wishes they could be a better person for you. I apologize if I ever fell short, in anything I did. You’re in my heart always."

Say what you will about the whole "blaccent" controversy but at least Awkwafina acknowledges it and actually apologized for it. It's quite unfortunate that she fell victim to cancel culture but at the end of the day, the stability of her mental health is all that matters and if leaving social media is the only solution, then so be it.

Meanwhile, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is available for streaming on Disney+.
