Avenue 5 Featurette Introduces Us to a Luxury Hotel/Spa in Space

The Orville pretty much tried to give us a comedic take on Star Trek, but HBO is giving us an entirely new spin on the genre with their upcoming show Avenue 5. We have a new featurette introducing us to this luxury starship, and it stars Zach Woods as Avenue 5's head of passenger services, Matthew Spencer.

Check it out:

With Trek basically embracing the concept of the starships as actual ships, it's kind of a fun twist that there would be a starship out there that functions like a luxury cruise ship—with no missions or objectives, just amenities to help the passengers relax and have fun.

It's interesting that this show would come from Armando Iannucci as well, since he's best known for his political comedies like Veep, In the Loop, and The Death of Stalin. I'm sure he has some smart things to say with Avenue 5, too and based on the featurette alone, I think there's going to be some kind of sharp critique on Capitalism or the pointlessness of cruise ships in the first place.

Here's the official description of the show:

Set 40 years in the future when the solar system is the world's oyster, Avenue 5 follows the captain and crew of a luxury space cruise ship as they navigate disgruntled passengers and unexpected events after experiencing technical difficulties onboard.

Catch Avenue 5 when it premieres on HBO this coming Jan. 19.
