While we're still several years away from its release in theaters, fans are already looking forward to the upcoming MCU crossover film Avengers: Secret Wars which will serve as the culmination of the Multiverse Saga.

The plot details still remain under wraps at the moment, but we can pretty much assume that it will double down on the multiverse if they follow the source material and there are rumors that they are planning to bring back more heroes from non-MCU movies.

There are also speculations right now on who can potentially do the daunting task of directing the film which will be a herculean effort given its bigger scale and ambitious story that Marvel Studios want to pull off.

Last week, we learned a rumor that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi is currently the top choice for the job although it sounds like it was nowhere near to the truth yet.

Now, another notable director has emerged in the rumor mill and it's an award-winning filmmaker who helmed some of the best films this century.

Alfonso Cuaron is Reportedly Being Eyed to Direct Avengers: Secret Wars

According to insider Daniel Richtman on X, Marvel Studios is also eyeing Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron, who is known for helming acclaimed films such as Gravity, Roma, and Children of Men, to direct Avengers: Secret Wars.

So far, Marvel Studios or Cuaron's representative have not commented on the rumor.

While the idea of Cuaron helming the MCU crossover film is intriguing, it is a wild rumor to consider since he is known to be an auteur and it is difficult to see him get involved in a studio film like this.

Even if he has prior experience directing a franchise film with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, it would be surprising if Cuaron ends up signing on to do the movie since he won't have any full creative control like all of his past films and a director of his caliber is not usually interested on a project like this.

Perhaps it's all just a pipe dream for Marvel Studios and they are aiming high as they're still looking for a director who is up to the task of helming the franchise's most ambitious project.

It is likely that we'll hear a different name other than Cuaron or even Raimi when Marvel Studios finally announces the director of the film. For now, all we can do is speculate endlessly and it might take a while before we'll hear any confirmation on it.

Avengers: Secret Wars is slated for release in theaters on May 7, 2027.
