The aftermath of Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War continues to be one of the most depressing sequences in a Marvel film. But which Infinity Stone was responsible for turning half of the universe into dust?
It's an unusual question but one that Infinity War VFX supervisor Dan DeLeeuw has considered for a long time. DeLeeuw revealed to Inverse that his team mulled over the idea for a long time. In the end, it was down to the Infinity Stone that has already proven its destructive power.
"The Power Stone was blipping them out of existence," DeLeeuw confirmed, sharing that the VFX team actually worked on variations of the "blip out" highlighting each Stone's signature hue. In the end, they all decided on the Power Stone's swift and destructive nature.
"We had concept art combining all those things, and it was getting too busy. It became too complicated. It was stepping on what the actors were doing. So it became ‘body turns to ash.' We peeled away all those layers and focused on that one [Power Stone], deciding how quickly it would consume someone, what pattern it would consume them."
Fans already got a glimpse of how the Power Stone works in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. In the scene where Peter Quill grabs the Stone, his face clearly turns to dust. However, the support of his companions and his unique lineage actually allowed him to survive the Stone's effects.
Avengers: Infinity War will be available on Blu-Ray on August 14.
