Avengers: Endgame Director Says Marvel Will See LGBTQ Heroes ‘Very Soon’

Marvel has been making huge strides in terms of diversity and representation with films like Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Now, Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo promises fans that Marvel is going to debut superhero from the LGBTQ community very soon.

Speaking in an interview with India's Pink Villa to help promote his upcoming film, Russo was asked whether it was time for the Marvel to introduce an LGBTQ hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The filmmaker's response was overwhelmingly positive.

"One hundred percent and you will see one very soon," the director told the entertainment news outlet.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to fans. Marvel has since been trying to feature queer heroes in its films. Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) was being marketed as a bisexual character. The Asgardian warrior's sexuality was hinted at n the film, though a romantic encounter was cut off from a scene in the film because Taika Waititi explains that "it distracted from the scene's vital exposition"

There were also rumors that a deleted scene from Black Panther was supposed to hint at Okoye (Dain Gurira) and Ayo's (Florence Kasumba) mutual interest. This would have also made her a bisexual warrior – after all, she is later on seen to have a relationship together with W'Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya).

Now, word has it that Marvel is planning to feature the franchise's first openly gay male lead in The Eternals, Hercules. In Marvel Comics, the Olympian was often depicted as a bisexual character.
