Avengers: Endgame Co-Writer Reveals How Bringing Captain Marvel to the Fold Proved Challenging

It turns out that one of the biggest challenges that Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Steven McFeely dealt with in putting together the highly-anticipated end to the stories of our beloved heroes was bringing Captain Marvel to the fold.

In a new interview via Comicbook.com, McFeely admitted that the time her solo film is set had its benefits and issues that they had to cope with.

"Well, we were lucky enough that they already wanted to make a period movie, so that it didn't have to conflict with the events of Infinity War," the co-writer said. "She didn't have to be ignoring the snap, or anything like that," he went on to say.

Their team closely collaborated with Brie Larson and filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to make sure it all worked out.

However, another problem came when they ended up having to film Captain Marvel's Avengers: Endgame scenes before her actual solo film. It didn't help that there is this massive time jump in between because they had to make sure that the version we see in the film, who is 20 years older, is consistent with what we saw in the origin film, but also had the potential changes that a typical character would go through in a couple of decades.

"It's also a weird thing in that our scenes take place 20 years after their movie ends, and there's any number of experiences that could have slightly altered her approach and appearance," McFeely said.

In the end, the duo was able to make it work. While Captain Marvel wasn't in Avengers: Endgame as long as some fans expected, McFeely and Markus were able to establish her as a powerful asset to the team and a capable leader while still staying true to the character we see in the solo film.
