Avengers 4’s Joe And Anthony Russo Want To Direct A Star Wars Movie

It looks like Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo want to take a ride to Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away.

Speaking with fans during a Question and Answer session after Collider's special Avengers: Infinity War screening last Wednesday (via Geek Tyrant), the Russo brothers talked about various things, opening up about the movie and dodging questions about Avengers 4. What Marvel fans didn't really expect was the directorial duo's admission that they'd love to work on a Star Wars project in the near future.

Admitting that he and his brother watched a whole lot of Empire Strikes Back when it was released in cinemas, Joe said that he and his sibling grew up with the Star Wars franchise just like a regular fan.

"We grew up on Star Wars like everyone else did. I went to the theater when I was 11 years old to see Empire Strikes Back and sat in the theater from 11:30 in the morning until 10:00 at night and watched it back to back to back," Joe told the audience. "So it was a huge influence on us growing up. Of course, we'd love to work, at some point, in the Star Wars universe, but right now our heads are in the middle of another movie."

Of course, work on Avengers 4 won't last forever, and the Russos have been planning to take a break from the comic book movie genre after finishing their two-part Avengers movie. The only question now is whether they'd take their interest in working on a Star Wars film seriously.

Talk about the Russos taking on a Star Wars film started sparking when the two were spotted on the set of Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian, and many fans started hoping that Lucasfilm might approach the two directors to work on a future Star Wars spinoff or on another trilogy after Episode IX. Joe and Anthony have done such excellent work for Marvel, there's no doubt they'd bring the same kind of excellence to the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
