Avatar: The Way of Water Star Sam Worthington Opens Up About Disastrous James Bond Audition

There is little doubt that Daniel Craig did an excellent job at playing James Bond but there was a time when actors were trying out for the role and anyone could have been 007. Amazingly, Avatar: The Way of Water star Sam Worthington was one of the actors who auditioned for the part and he is sharing details about his disastrous attempt to play the spy.

Sam Worthington recently spoke to Variety where he revealed that he had tried out for James Bond at the same time as Daniel Craig. Interestingly, the audition process included the Avatar 2 star in a tuxedo recreating a scene from From Russia With Love and having his hair fixed by 007 producer Barbara Broccoli.

So what happened with the audition? “I could play Bond as a killer, but I couldn’t get the debonair down for the life of me,” Worthington said. “The suit did not fit.”

He then admitted, “I had no idea what I was doing.”

Although it didn't work out, Worthington pointed out that he had a lot of respect for Broccoli and fellow James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson.

“They are so detailed and meticulous,” he said. “They are protective and passionate about this series. And what I learned is that you listen to these people.”

Worthington added that he feels similarly about the producers as Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron.

“It’s the same thing with James Cameron. He’s done all the research and there’s nothing you can’t ask him that he doesn’t have an answer for,” he said.

It's interestingly odd to imagine Sam Worthington playing James Bond and the producers may have made the right choice of going with Daniel Craig instead. Nevertheless, it all worked out for Worthington as he will return as Jake Sully in Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere in theaters on December 16, 2022.
