Avatar: The Way of Water Star Sam Worthington Discusses Jake Sully's Family Mindset

It has been years since we saw Jake Sully and there is little doubt that a lot has changed since he became Toruk Makto in Avatar. So what can we expect when Jake returns in Avatar: The Way of Water? Sam Worthington discussed his character's mindset now that he has lived a truly fulfilling life on Pandora.

We already know that Jake Sully has turned Pandora into his home and is now a family man. So it's no surprise that having children has changed Jake and Sam Worthington confirmed with Empire that his character only wants peace as he tries to raise a family during a time of war.

"Jake’s journey this time is, does he decide to be how he ended the last movie, as this leader of these tribes, or does he just focus on being the leader of a family?" Worthington said.

"That's the duality of his journey in episode two," he continued. "For Jake, whenever you include a family, be it the immediate one or the bigger one of all the tribes, the stakes are immediately going to be raised higher than they were in the first one, where it was just a solo journey."

Worthington also pointed out that Jake feels protective over the Meykatina, the Na'vi who live in the reefs of Pandora.

"I think by the time Jake gets to the reef, his family is the most important thing in the world," he said. "So he just wants to assimilate with these people, and do the best he can to prove to them that he's left these warmongering ways behind — he doesn't want to bring the war down to the reef people, he doesn't want to bring the baggage of being Toruk Makto with him."

"He just wants to kind of fit in and live with his family in this peaceful, harmonious environment," Worthington continued. "The problem is they're always chased by something."

Unfortunately, Jake, Neytiri, and the rest of the Na'vi will be facing conflict in Avatar: The Way of Water. Here's hoping they will manage to protect their people and planet.

Avatar: The Way of Water will premiere on December 16, 2022.
