Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently in production, and now, one of its stars has confirmed the official episode count for the show's first season.
Speaking to Handsome Genius Clud Radio Show podcast, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee revealed that there will be a total of eight hour-long episodes for Season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, contradicting previous reports that the season would have ten episodes.
With eight episodes each having 60-minute runtime, Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 will have a total runtime of 480 minutes. It's worth noting that it's the exact same runtime as Book One: Water, the first season of Nickelodeon's original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated show, which consisted of 20 episodes running at 24 minutes each.
Lee will be playing the role of Uncle Iroh in Netflix's Avatar series. The character was famously voiced by the late Makoto Iwamatsu in the first two seasons (Book One: Water and Book Two: Earth of the Nickelodeon animated series. Greg Baldwin later took over the role for Avatar's third and final season (Book Three: Fire).
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series aired on Nickelodeon for a total of 61 episodes from 2005 to 2008. The show received critical acclaim, but the 2010 film adaptation, titled The Last Airbender, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, received mostly negative reviews.
The animated series was later followed by a sequel series titled The Legend of Korra, which aired for 52 episodes that ran across four seasons from 2012 to 2014.
In 2018, Netflix announced its live-action adaptation of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. The show is currently in its fourth month of filming in Vancouver, Canada, Avatar News reports. Production is expected to run for a total of six months.
