In a recent interview with Empire, Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau discussed the new CGI creatures that live in the aquatic world of Pandora. These creatures shares similarities with creatures on Earth, only with distinct features that are fitting in Pandora.

"The idea was to create a creature that was on the scale of Pandora. A tulkun is, like, 300 feet long," Landau explained. "They are a sentient species and as intelligent in their own way as the Na’vi are in theirs. [...] [A skimwing is] like a giant flying fish but keeps its trail in the water – its tail is its propulsion. The Metkayina [water tribe] and all the reef people use them as their military mounts when they’re going into combat. They can go 60 miles per hour for endless periods of time."

Both Tulkun and Skimwing are spotted in the first trailer, while the Ilu creatures have already been previewed at Disney World's Flight of Passage ride. Landau added that Ilu creatures are the "water equivalent of a direhorse” but “more playful than skimwings.”

Landau's recent revelation about the new sea creatures of Pandora certainly adds anticipation to the film. It's no secret that the Avatar sequel will center on the unexplored ocean of Pandora together with the creatures living in it. With that said, it implies that the process of creating these sea creatures isn't just about the CGI and technicalities, but also involves imaginative yet careful planning on how these creatures will be significant in the Na'vi society of Pandora.

Fans will once again explore the world of Pandora and the new sea creatures when Avatar: The Way of Water hit the big screens on December 16.
