After a five-year tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which saw him play second fiddle to Tony Stark and the Avengers, Peter Parker finally solidified himself as his own man in Spider-Man: No Way Home which arguably is the best film in the Homecoming trilogy.

Much like any film, the Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures production experienced several rewrites along the way, and while what we got what a pretty solid superhero flick loaded with action and fan service, it turns out that they changed one element of the film's story that frankly would have made more sense from a narrative standpoint.

Concept artist Phil Langone revealed on Instagram that an early draft for No Way Home originally saw Aunt May die at the hands of a returning Mysterio who everyone presumed was dead in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Langone even posted the storyboard that was ultimately scrapped for reasons he didn't disclose.

Now that we're learning about this, it makes me wish Marvel and Sony just went with their original plans for Aunt May's arc because obviously, it would have made more logical sense for Mysterio to be the one who killed Peter's loved one. But I guess they really wanted to establish Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin as the film's main villain even though he doesn't share any history with Tom Holland's version of the web-slinger.

And let's be honest, Dafoe's involvement in the film was another nostalgia grab much like everything else in the film so it's quite baffling how the likes of Mysterio had to get sidelined.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is streaming on Netflix.
