Those who read the final chapter of the manga know that Attack on Titan ends with the death of Eren Yaeger. Eren planned to wipe out humanity aside from Eldians after seeing how Marley persecuted the Titans. This plan turned Eren into a villain, and he died at the end.

However, the finale hinted that Eren planned these horrible things because of his friends, and his final conversation with Armin left fans convinced that his main goal in attacking Marley was to give his friends a chance to kill him, so that's why he decided to become a villain volutarily.

Twitter user AIko_Catto shared an English translation of a recent promo for the Attack on Titan finale, which confirmed this theory of Eren's true intentions on why he planned to become the bad guy. "For his friends to survive the devastating future he saw through his Attack Titan powers, [Eren] became the devil himself and let him get defeated," the translation reads. "After it all ends, Mikasa returns to her hometown and embraces her feelings for Eren who was sacrificed, and Armin decides to have a talk with the others."

Many fans didn't expect the plot twist of Eren turning into a villain, but it turns out that in the end, he chose to justify his genocidal plans by prioritizing his friends' future first. However, many fans still criticized Eren's character development, and compared his ending to Lelouch's from Code Geass.

The final episodes of the Attack on Titan anime series are expected to premiere next year.
