Just a while ago, we've heard that Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder is working again with Netflix for the next film that he is directing which is the science-fiction adventure Rebel Moon. Now, we have details on who is going to lead the film.
Deadline has reported that Atomic Blonde star Sofia Boutella has been cast to play the lead in Rebel Moon. The report indicated that Snyder has been meeting with different talents for months. It all came down to a small group of actresses, with Boutella ending up getting the role as she was able to wow Snyder. There are no details yet about the character that she is going to play.
Snyder is co-writing the screenplay with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, based on the story by Snyder and Johnstad. The story centers on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.
We don't know what kind of role is Boutella exactly playing in the film, but she might play the "young woman with a mysterious past" that was described in the logline. As for her casting as the lead, she has proven in numerous films in the past like Climax, The Mummy, and Hotel Artemis that she is a great actress, particularly in the action genre. This looks like yet again another action-packed role that she might play. She is definitely an interesting choice and let's see who they'll cast on the other roles.
Rebel Moon will be Snyder's second film for Netflix after the success of Army of the Dead earlier this year. In a recent interview with Post-Credit Podcast, he compared the scale of the film to Man of Steel and called it "the biggest steroids I can give it." Based on the sound of it, it looks like it will be an epic science fiction tale and it has the potential to be a huge hit for Netflix.
The film has no release date yet, but it is set to begin production next year.
