Assassin's Creed's Actors Talk Movie Curse and the Lack of Worry for It

Any gamer who has been closely following the cinematic development of some franchises would know that there always exists a curse. That is, the curse of making bad movies out of game franchises.

Interestingly, actor Michael Fassbender, who played the role of Callum Lynch in the film, was not aware of this particular curse, stating in an interview in IGN that he only became aware of it when told by journalists. And even when he was told about it, he admits that he never took it seriously.

That may be a good thing, since in his thoughts, he believed that someone just had to make a good game-turned-movie to break the curse—and hopefully, Assassin's Creed would be it.

"I just found this universe to be so fascinating and I thought there was so much in it that would lend itself so well to cinema experience. Never really concern me, and again, those kind of worries or anything you would stress around these areas is pointless. Because there's nothing you can do about that all. Only you can do is focus your energies and try to make something good."

Co-actor Marion Cotillard backs this up by attesting to Justin Kurzel's vision as a director. She describes him as someone with a vision rather than a technician, which for her feels is a big factor that can let Assassin's Creed transcend beyond mere adaptation.

From what we've already seen in Assassin's Creed, it's not unlikely for it to be among the rare videogame-turned-movie gems. And I'm not saying this because of my bias towards both Fassbender and Cotillard, but also because the material itself has some really great dynamics, from past and present storytelling to the cinematic feel of how iterations of Assassin's Creed have gone down as a franchise.

Assassin's Creed is one of the must-watch titles come its Dec. 21 release date. You can check out the full interview with the cast and director Kurzel below.
