Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher are no stranger to the world of rom-coms but believe it or not, this is the first time the two are working together for a Netflix movie entitled Your Place or Mine. The movie is out today, February 10th, which is just a few days from Valentine's Day.

In the days leading up to the film's release, the two A-listers appeared on the red carpet to promote the film. Fans, however, noticed something off between the two, which made them curious to know whether Kutcher and Witherspoon are friends in real life. Here's what we know about the two:

In the red carpet photos of Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon circulating online, the two appear to be awkward with each other. The photos show a short gap between the two and Kutcher putting his hands inside his jean pockets instead of over Witherspoon's shoulder. This made fans think that the two don't like each other and are not friends in real life.

But there's actually more beyond what we see in the photos. Witherspoon, Kutcher, and Kutcher's wife, Mila Kunis, are actually friends in real life. And there's actually a very cute and sweet reason why Kutcher decided to keep his hands in his pockets.

In the Chicks in the Office podcast, Kutcher was actually asked about the awkward photos. The actor shared that it was actually his wife, Kunis, who told him and Witherspoon to "act like you like each other!"

"If I put my arm around her and was, like, all friendly with her, I'd be having an affair with her. The rumor would be that I'm having an affair with her. If I stand next to her, I put my hands in my pockets, so there's no chance that could be the rumor, the rumor is we don't like each other."

Kutcher explained that it was a lose-lose situation but cleared that he is really good friends with Witherspoon, who was actually the reason why he joined the film.

Witherspoon revealed on the Today Show that she is close friends with Kunis before working with Kutcher. For the film, Witherspoon and Kutcher decided to FaceTime and share videos with each other so they could also be closer.

Surprisingly, the two only had a total of three scenes together in the entire film. Still, the chemistry between the two was so believable that viewers really believed the two have been long-term friends.

No, the inspiration behind Your Place or Mine actually comes fro a classic rom-com, Pillow Talk, which starred Doris Day and Rock Hudson.

Writer/director Aline Brosh McKenna shared that the film inspired her to make use of a split screen to share moments between the two actors.

"It was a little bit the idea of updating a Rock Hudson-Doris Day movie where they're separated. But without using kind of the gloriously dated conventions that are in those movies."

The official synopsis on Netflix reads:

“Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) have been best friends for 20 years even though they are total opposites. Practical, risk-averse accountant Debbie craves routine and stability with her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel) in LA; Stylish brand consultant Peter thrives on change in New York City. When they swap houses and lives for a week, they learn they haven't told each other everything after all and discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.”

The two only have three scenes together physically but the whole split-screen feels very real, like the audience is part of the moment between the two.

McKenna explains:

"It's five sequences that we designed with the storyboard artist to be the split-screen sequences. But the idea was always to keep them going. That was really fun was to try and figure out how to keep them separate but have them feel very together. They're communicating all through the movie. They're always tied together."
