Amid the long-running ‘video game curse’ of never adapting the games successfully to screen, the excellent quality and audience reception brought Arcane Season 2 to development. Riot Games’ League of Legends was adapted into a Netflix animated series after many years of working on the show, even to the point of winning an Outstanding Animated Program award at the Emmys for being one of the best shows of the year.

Arcane Season 1 was released on November 6, 2021, after six years in the making. And while Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent celebrates the triumphant debut and hails fans for highly anticipating Arcane Season 2, Laurent admits they felt like they were ‘paying the price’ for not moving steps ahead in making the storyboard for the second season.

“I just watched the third episode of [Arcane Season 2], before my flight to China. We’re making progress on it. [But] it’s not ready yet.” Laurent said in an interview with Win.GG, “There are two reasons for that, you want the quality, we just don’t want to rush, and so that takes time, and that’s a good reason.”

The Riot Games CEO added, “The bad reason is that, honestly, we didn’t know if [Arcane Season 1] was going to be a success. So we didn’t start [Arcane Season 2] until after. We didn’t know. And so, if I’d known [Arcane was going to be successful], we could have started Season 2 way earlier, but we didn’t know, so we kind of waited a bit and so now, we’re paying the price.”

In a world filled with numerous Netflix series cancellations left and right despite their prepared script for tons of renewals, Arcane Season 2 is definitely one of the few shows fans are still expecting to be produced of high quality. Even Henry Cavill, who is an avid video gamer and a fan, quite enjoyed binging the series himself.

Considering that animated shows as rare as Arcane deserve the high praises for its brilliant storytelling and animation style, it’s only good that Riot Games is taking their time in preparing Season 2.

While the first season may have taken six years to come to fruition, now that they at least have the model designs of the characters, it is safe to presume it wouldn’t take as long. Arcane Season 2 has yet to receive its confirmed release date, but a 2023 release is looking unlikely.
