It's no secret that superhero movies require a lot of special effects, massive sets, and a huge budget. Aquaman star Willem Dafoe understands this but has also expressed concern about how comic book films can be "too noisy" in the long run.
Dafoe recently spoke to 92Y about his new movie The Lighthouse but he also discussed his previous work on comic book films. Interestingly, the Spider-Man star commented on how overwhelming the production can be in superhero movies.
"You have fun with some of the things that you get to do, because there's lots of hardware and there's lots of crazy crane shots and those kind of things," Dafoe said. "That's fun. But stuff is overshot. They spend a lot of money on big set pieces, because that's what delivers the action, and they're too noisy."
Sure, he might not be a big fan of overpriced productions but Dafoe is also careful not to offend the folks at Marvel and DC. This is why he immediately backtracked on the comment.
"But let's not get into this", he said with a laugh. "I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me. But, no, seriously, folks. Look, those aren't the movies I run to."
He's right about that. Although we remember Dafoe for playing Green Goblin in Spider-Man or Vulko in Aquaman, those are hardly his most memorable roles in his long career. Personally, I loved him in The Boondock Saints ("There was a firefight!") and I'm sure you have your own favorite Dafoe role as well.
Dafoe's latest film The Lighthouse was released on October 18.
