Ant-Man 3 Box Office Forecast Predicts Weaker Opening Than Thor 4

Marvel Phase Five opens with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania this coming February, and though MCU fans are highly anticipating the Ant-Man threequel, seeing as it will also introduce the new Thanos, Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, the current box office tracking suggests that Ant-Man 3 is set to open at a lower number than Thor: Love and Thunder, but higher than the first Ant-Man film and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

According to Boxoffice Pro, Marvel Studios is expected to earn between $96 and $131 million in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s opening weekend at the box office. When compared to recent MCU films on their opening weekends: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($181 million) and Thor: Love and Thunder ($144 million), Ant-Man 3 is bound to fall short. However, on a more positive note, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will exceed its predecessors: 2015’s Ant-Man ($57.2 million) and 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75.8 million).

Thor: Love and Thunder’s box office may not have been as huge a success as Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the Thor franchise did have its four installments out-gross its predecessors. As for how the Ant-Man threequel could perform similarly in its own franchise, I guess we'll have to wait and see in February.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set after Avengers: Endgame where Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) get swooped into the Quantum Realm along with Scott’s daughter, Cassie, and Hope’s parents Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne. There, in the Quantum Realm, the heroes will finally be introduced to a Kang variant, Kang the Conqueror, who plans on taking over the multiverse of his own accord.

Ant-Man 3 director Peyton Reed has reiterated time and time again how the franchise is and should not be meant to be the Avengers films’ “palate cleanser” seeing its potential to be as important and central to the MCU. Now that the threequel is opening Marvel’s new phase, will Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania be able to prove the box office predictions wrong?

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is slated to hit theaters on February 17, 2023.
