Animated Magic: The Gathering Might Spinoff Into Live-Action Series, According to Russo Brothers

The Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently talked a lot about their latest Marvel film at San Diego Comic-Con but they also talked about the highly-anticipated Netflix adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, and according to the filmmakers, the animated project has a potential to spin it off into live-action, Deadline reports.

According to Deadline, the Russo Brothers said that they grew up playing MTG and that the adaptation was inevitable to them. They also teased that the animated adaptation will get a live-action version someday: "It's an animated project with the potential to spin it off into live-action," Joe Russo said. "It's a game we love — we're geeks and love Magic: The Gathering and we're excited to tell stories with it."

The new animated series is being produced by the animation network and studio Octopie with writers Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick).

Earlier this month, Nic Kelman, head of story and entertainment for Wizards of the Coast and executive producer on the Netflix series, said the show will be true to the spirit of MTG's story.

"So what we plan to do is, the story and the characters are going to be true to the spirit of the story and the characters that are preexisting," Kelman told TheWrap. "We're going to be true to that and the world and also true to the core values of those worlds and characters. But we're definitely going to try to carve out our own continuity space in a very similar way to other franchises that have done that with adventures in a new medium from preexisting stories."

Netflix's Magic: The Gathering animated series is expected to be released on Netflix in 2020.
