Angela Bassett Faces Major Obstacle on Her Path to Oscar Glory

With her Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Award win last month, Angela Bassett was cemented as the frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is also the first-ever acting nomination in the MCU.

The momentum seems to be going well for the actress in the past few weeks leading up to Oscar night. Her win will be very significant given her veteran status in the industry and she is considered overdue to win an Oscar at this point in her career. Obviously, it will also become historical in the MCU history as well.

However, Bassett faced a major obstacle on her path to a potential Oscar win last night as she lost the Best Supporting Actress award at the 76th BAFTA Film Awards. Kerry Condon of The Banshees of Inisherin was named the winner of the category.

The actress was also competing with other nominees such as Hong Chau (The Whale), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), and Carey Mulligan (She Said). It was also the film's only nomination in the ceremony.

This is a huge threat to Bassett's potential win at the Oscars since she now has a significant competitor in the category and she won't be sweeping all major precursor awards before the Academy Awards which could have made her an undeniable frontrunner.

Despite that, it's not the end of the road for Bassett's awards season performance since there is still the SAG Awards this coming weekend which is her next shot to nabbing another major precursor award and a lot of experts are predicting she will win the category that could lead to her winning the Oscar eventually.

There is also an argument that can be made that Condon's win might just be simply because of the awards' British contingency and they favor "one of their own" rather than awarding an American. Nevertheless, this is still proof that Bassett's frontrunner status is not as strong as we may think.

Let's wait and see how Bassett's awards momentum will continue in the coming weeks leading up to the Oscar night and whether she'll end up winning her category at the end.
