Under the Banner of Heaven is based on a novel written by best-selling author Jon Krakauer. (He also penned Into the Wild, which was adapted into a 2007 film directed by Sean Penn.) It explores a breakaway Mormon community that accepted a fundamentalist version of the LDS faith. Two members of the group finally turned to murder, allegedly on God's orders.

“He believed God commanded him to,” Krakauer said of one of the murderers in a 2003 interview with NPR. “These murders were in 1984, and still he feels no remorse for what he did. It was a terribly brutal crime but he feels no regret because to this day he believes it was part of God’s plan.”
